It's taken quite a time for those of us who've been puzzled by conservation policy in the uplands to understand why such obiously perverse decisions were being made accompanied by such tortuous justifications. Just as we've been getting to piece it all together it's good to see that others are now raising the same issues on the national stage.
Here is the latest contribution, and very welcome too.
But the big question is why do local officers of conservation organisations follow the lead of grouse moor owners in managing in a way that marginalises the natural wildlife rather than taking the opportunity on public land to achieve an imaginative vision? Are they responding to instructions from above? Are they themselves as individuals so much tied by background to the farm and shoot lobby that they cannot rock the boat?
As Monbiot says those in the farming industry only amount to 1.5% of the population of rural Britain. So why do they always get their way? Time for others to raise their voices.
