Bark Off

It's characteristic of Rowan that its bark peels off as it gets to the end of its life. It's perfectly natural and it makes opportunities for insects lichens and other organisms to take over.

You might think the same happens with Birch when you see this example.



But you would be wrong. Birch bark does not normally behave as Rowan does. This tree was poisoned about ten years ago by a 'conservationist' with a pot of weedkiller. That is called 'habitat creation' otherwise known as habitat destruction.
